1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website places in your browser when you visit. They let the site remember things between page loads - like whether you are logged in, or which language you prefer.

localStorage is similar but slightly different: it stores data in your browser that does not expire when you close the tab, and it is never automatically sent to a server. We use localStorage (not cookies) to save your game progress.

This policy explains everything Punkham Mayhem stores in your browser and why - so you can make an informed choice.

You can play Punkham Mayhem with analytics cookies disabled. The only thing that will stop working is your local save if you clear your browser's site data - and that is stored in localStorage, which you already fully control.

2. What We Use at a Glance

Punkham Mayhem uses three categories of browser storage. Here is a quick overview before the detail below.

💾
Game Saves

Essential
🔄

3. Full Cookie & Storage Table

Every item stored in your browser by Punkham Mayhem is listed here - nothing hidden.

Name Type Set by Purpose Duration
punkham_save localStorage punkham.punkverse.world Stores your game progress: crew roster, score, unlocks, and map state. Lives on your device only - never sent to our servers. Until you clear browser site data
punkham_settings localStorage punkham.punkverse.world Saves your in-game preferences: audio volume, display settings, and control bindings. Until you clear browser site data
punkham_session Session cookie punkham.punkverse.world Maintains your active game session on the server (e.g. for leaderboard submissions). Deleted automatically when you close your browser. Browser session (tab close)
_ga Analytics Google Analytics Assigns a unique anonymous ID to each visitor so Google Analytics can distinguish between users without identifying anyone personally. 2 years
_ga_[ID] Analytics Google Analytics (GA4) Maintains session state for GA4. Stores an anonymous session identifier and the session count. Works alongside _ga. 2 years
_gid Analytics Google Analytics Distinguishes users within a 24-hour window. Refreshes daily. Helps report same-day returning visits accurately. 24 hours
_gat Analytics Google Analytics Throttles the rate at which analytics data is sent to Google's servers. Prevents the game from flooding GA with requests. 1 minute
IP anonymisation is on We have enabled IP anonymisation in Google Analytics. Google truncates your IP address before storing it, so it can never be used to identify you. No full IP address is ever stored by Google on our behalf.

4. Game Saves (localStorage)

Your game progress and settings are stored using your browser's localStorage API. This is different from a cookie in an important way: localStorage data never leaves your device. It is not sent to our server, ever.

localStorage is not a "cookie" under the strict GDPR definition, but we disclose it here in full because you deserve to know about every form of browser storage we use.

5. Session Cookies

When you submit a score to the leaderboard, a short-lived session cookie is set to verify that the submission is genuine. This cookie:

If you are only browsing the game without submitting to the leaderboard, no session cookie is set.

6. Analytics Cookies (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how players interact with the game - which screens are visited most, how long sessions last, and what device types are common. This helps us prioritise bug fixes and performance improvements.

Google Analytics sets the cookies listed in the table above (_ga, _ga_[ID], _gid, _gat). These are first-party cookies - they are served under the punkham.punkverse.world domain, not google.com.

ℹ️
Your legal basis (GDPR) Under GDPR, analytics cookies require your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) if they are not strictly necessary. We rely on a cookie consent prompt to collect this consent on first visit. You can withdraw consent at any time using the opt-out methods in Section 7 below.

7. How to Disable or Opt Out

You have several ways to control cookies and browser storage. Disabling analytics cookies will not break gameplay.

Opt out of Google Analytics specifically

  1. Install the official Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on - available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. It tells Google's JavaScript not to send data for your browser.
  2. Alternatively, block the GA script domain (google-analytics.com) using a browser extension such as uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger.
  3. Use a privacy-focused browser (Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection, Brave) - these block GA cookies by default.

⚠️
Clearing site data will delete your save If you clear cookies and localStorage for punkham.punkverse.world, your local game save will be permanently deleted. We cannot recover it. Export your save first if this matters to you.

8. Your Rights (GDPR)

If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK, GDPR gives you specific rights over cookie-based data:

Strictly necessary storage (your game save in localStorage, session cookies for leaderboard submission) does not require consent under GDPR - these are needed for the service to function. Only analytics cookies require consent.

9. Changes to This Policy

If we add new cookies, change how we use existing ones, or switch analytics providers, we will update this page and display a notice inside the game for at least 14 days. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent change.
